Fifteen years of installations, one company behind it.

Durban CCTV is the camera arm of DG Technologies. Same people, same records, same phone answered — a focused name for the camera work, and an operating history that did not start when the domain was registered.

Who runs it

David Morel is Technical Director of DG Technologies and leads the camera work. He has been installing and supporting camera, network and automation systems across KwaZulu-Natal since 2011 — homes and complexes in Durban North, Umhlanga and Ballito, offices and warehouses around the city, and industrial sites where the cameras matter to an insurance claim rather than to peace of mind.

That work produced two things this site is built on. The first is a set of methods that only come from doing the job badly once and then never again — why a camera bracket can undo an hour of careful earthing, why a quotation should be split by cause when two storms are involved, why the recorder should not live behind the security desk. The second is a written record going back to 2011: quotations, site correspondence, fault reports and photographs, which is where most of what we publish comes from.

Why a separate name

DG Technologies does integrated work — Crestron automation, estate systems, access control, networking, cinema. That is a different conversation from somebody who wants four cameras and a phone app, and trying to hold both in one brand serves neither well.

So the split is by the kind of job, not by capability. Durban CCTV handles cameras as the job: homes, complexes, offices, small industrial sites, upgrades and repairs. DG Technologies handles cameras as part of a larger engineered system. If your enquiry belongs on the other side of that line, we will say so and pass it across rather than quote for something we are not the right people to do.

How we work

We walk the property before quoting, agree what each camera has to capture, and put it on a drawing you can argue with. Coverage gets marked in one colour and cable routes in another, and anything we are deliberately not covering gets written down rather than left to be discovered later.

We publish the reasoning too. The writing on this site is drawn from our own jobs — faults we diagnosed, decisions we had to justify, and the history of surveillance in this city going back to newspaper records from the 1970s. None of it is supplier marketing, and where a claim rests on something we cannot show you, we say that in the article.

Where we work

Durban and the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast: Durban, Durban North, Glenashley, Umhlanga, La Lucia, Umdloti, La Mercy, Ballito, Salt Rock, Mount Edgecombe, Brettenwood Coastal Estate, Zimbali, Simbithi Eco Estate, Westville, Hillcrest, and the surrounding areas. Coastal conditions shape most of what we specify — salt air, summer storms and an unreliable supply do more damage to camera systems here than anything a burglar does.
